El Quseir

EgyptA prominent port in the history of Egypt, El Quseir is renowned for its relaxed atmosphere, pristine sandy beaches and coral reefs. For a tranquil and quiet holiday after days of cruising through River Nile and visiting all the prominent Egyptian highlights, El Quseir is the ideal place. This world class diving destination offers plenty for the scuba divers to explore. El Quseir is historically significant for being the starting point from where Queen Hatshepsut began the mystical voyage to the African Land of Punt.

See:

The ruins of the Roman settlement, Mons Claudianus are rare and beautiful sights near the resort. The settlement was home to quarry men and soldiers in the Roman period. The workshops, dwelling, granite columns, Hadrian’s Villa and the incomplete Temple of Venus remind one of the most visited memories of the glorious Roman past.

Myos Hormos, 8km to the north of El Quseir, is an ancient port. The foundations of the ruins of the Roman storage jars, pottery debris and the ancient port structures still exist in this archaeologically significant site. The port played a primary role in Rome’s trade with East Africa and India. Romans exported a wide variety of goods like wine, glass, metals, pottery and textiles and imported luxury goods, spices, silk and pearls through this port.

Quseir Fort, built in the sixteenth century was purpose-built to defend the key harbour, from the Portuguese traders. The watch tower, carts, pearl fishing boats and old cannons are the remnants of the fort, today. This Ottoman fortress has undergone restoration work and is home to a Visitor Centre that comprises rare exhibits from the local history and culture.

Wadi Hammamat is yet another must visit site, while a tourist is in El Quseir. Wadi Hammamat is famed for the rock inscriptions that date back to 4000 BC. Bekheny stones were produced from Wadi and the stone was considered very sacred. The stone is the building block of various architectural splendours in Egypt like pyramids, graves, temples and monuments. Bir Umm Fawakhir, another primary highlight of El Quseir is a fifth century gold mining settlement.
