Obergurgl
Obergurgl-Hochgurgl skiing area is the highest Austrian skiing area. Obergurgl is situated in the Oetz valley and the slopes are located at around 3,000 metres above sea level. The steep trails, extensive mogul slopes and off-pistes offer plenty for a great skiing experience in Obergurgl. Spectacular scenery and uncrowded slopes characterise the resort. The Alpine charm of the resort is intact with the excellent snow conditions in Obergurgl, owing to its altitude.
Must visit
St. Johannes Nepomuk in Obergurgl is a famous landmark of the resort and it is renowned for its gothic style exterior. Set against high mountainous terrain, the Obergurgl University centre is a major attraction in Obergurgl. The centre, situated at a height of 1,940 metres above the sea level is a marvellous sight to behold.
The Piccard monument that commemorates the forced landing made by Auguste Piccard on the gurgler glacier is yet another must see sight in the resort. The 150 year old Pirchhutter Kornmuhle, a water mill is converted into a museum, now. Tourists visiting Obergurgl do not miss the 'Lehrpfad Zirbenwald' pine forest that is a natural monument.
Must indulge
Obergurgl with its good snow record offers diverse terrain for the skiers. Home to many glaciers and peaks, the resort combines with Hochgurgl resort to form 110 kilometres of pistes that have 24 lifts. A majority of runs are well suited for the intermediates and beginners also have plenty of choices to practice the craft.
Ranked among the highest resorts in Austria, Obergurgl enjoys a long ski season. The uncrowded slopes offer plenty for the families also. The Advanced skiers have a few slopes in Hochgurgl that test their ability.
The ski school in Obergurgl ranks among the reputed ski schools in Austria and the schools offer private lessons in snowboarding, cross-country skiing and skiing. The schools also organise ski touring and weekly night shows for the tourists.
Children can learn the basics of skiing from the ski schools exclusively meant for them. Children above four years are taught in the ski schools. Kids above three years of age are offered two hours of ski kindergarten and lessons. Crèche for children over two years is provided at the resort. Many hotels also have a separate child care centre for the boarders.
Must enjoy
For the non-skiers an array of outdoor activities awaits them. The activities they can partake in are snowshoeing, night skiing, ice skating, curling, walking and sleigh rides. For those who are interested in indoor activities, sports like swimming, indoor golf, bowling, darts and billiards are a great option. Tourists who wish to lighten up can prefer thermal and healing baths, saunas and Jacuzzis. Themed entertainment, folklore evenings and concerts satisfy the artistic instinct in the travellers, who visit Obergurgl.
Must experience
The winter season kickstarts a series of live music performances, dance shows, magic moments, acrobatics and comedy performances, during the ski opening program in Obergurgl. Emotions, bliss and passion run high on 'Les Artistes Fantastiques'.
Must revel
The Apres Ski scene of Obergurgl is brightened up by three late night discos, around 21 bars and pubs in the resort. The unpretentious, friendly and relaxed atmosphere at the resort tempts the tourists to visit the resort repeatedly. Around twenty two restaurants, self service cafes, mountain restaurants, coffee shops, traditional Austrian food outlets and Italian restaurants offer delectable fare to the travellers.
