Ellmau
Situated in the Tyrol region of Austria and the West-East valley, Ellmau is closer to Wilder Kaiser and Hohe Salve mountains. A traditional village, Ellmau is preferred by tourists who wish to spend their time in a quiet destination. This Alpine village has excellent infrastructure that supports the skiers who belong to the beginning and intermediate levels. The resort also caters to family skiing and is endowed with ski schools that teach skiing to everyone. Ellmau is an integral part of the 'BergWelt Wilder Kaiser' region along with Scheffau, Hopfgarten, Itter, Kelchsau, Soll, Westerndorf, et al. The charming village of Ellmau is linked to Ski-Welt ski circuit, which is Austria's largest ski area.
Sights
Ellmau is an attractive village with relaxed atmosphere and laid-back lifestyle. Home to chalet-type buildings and steeple churches; Ellmau has its own share of major attractions. The Local Heritage Museum with its wood-paneled living room, farming and forestry tools is a significant sight of Ellmau.
The picturesque Wilder Kaiser Nature Preserve is the perfect spot for hikers with its mountains and unexplored trails. Hiking and mountaineering schools of the region offer training and guided tours to the inquisitive travellers.
The Maria-Heimsuchung Chapel, situated close to the Kapellen Park was built by Johann Kaisermann, in the year 1721. The altar is built in baroque style and the altarpiece by Alois Wagner is delightful to view.
St. Michael's Parish Church built by Jakob Singer in the early 1740's is renowned for its high altar. The altar depicts Archangel Michael and is a unique specimen of baroque architecture.
The Ellmau KaiserBad is yet another important attraction which allures both the old and the young. The indoor adventure pool, outdoor pool, 'black hole' water slide, high-speed water slides, sauna, steam showers, tennis courts, climbing wall, hot whirlpools and controversial nudist area offer a great opportunity to engage in a lot of activities under one roof.
Skiing
Ellmau comprises unthreatening ski slopes and nursery slopes that are perfect for beginners and intermediates. The slopes of the Ski-Welt area pose a few challenges for the advanced skiers. The ski area of Ellmau is equipped with chairlifts, high-speed lifts and gondolas. The resort is reputed for world-class ski schools that offer unlimited family fun with the nursery slopes, ski schools and funicular railway.
Other activities
Travellers can indulge themselves in horse-drawn sleigh rides, walking, ice-skating and snowtubing, during winter. In summer, a tourist can enjoy outdoor swimming, mountain hiking, biking, tennis and golf, etc. The Wilder Kaiser mountain range is a hiker's and walker's delight.
Nightlife
The nightlife in Ellmau is not as lively as other resorts like Westendorf, Soll, Kitzbuhel, etc. There are a few nightclubs and bars like the Tenne nightclub, the Helden Bar, Café pub Memory and Otzy. In most of the nightclubs in the region, music is performed live.
Food
An impressive selection of pizzerias, inns, cafes and restaurants offer good food at reasonable rates. Traditional Tirolean cuisine inclusive of fondues and Strudel is served in a majority of the restaurants. Ellmauer Alm is a renowned place for eating near the slope side.
Shopping
Ellmau offers a delightful shopping experience for a tourist with innumerable shops compared to other resorts in the Ski-Welt area. The scenic village has a fairly good choice of ski shops, supermarket, grocers, souvenir shops, etc.
