Staying in hostels has long been the solution for students and younger travellers seeking affordable holidays. But the question remains, how are adults expected to save money?

Despite what many people believe, hostelling is becoming a viable and economical lodging option, even for adults and families. Hostels aren't what they used to be. Serious changes to décor and quality of hostels have created a new type of traveller. Hostels today are trendy and unique; plus, many have undergone radical transformations in order to accommodate families and older travellers.

From private sleeping and bath accommodations, to surf and dive locales in the tropical pacific, hostels are not what they used to be. For one thing, they no longer have curfews and do not require guests to do chores!
Instead, hostels are now operated in a similar manner to hotels in that they can be booked in advance of your arrival, and even offer pre-booked tours, activities, and rail tickets.
Selecting the Right Hostel for You
Although there have been tremendous efforts to improve the quality and care of hostels around Europe, it is still up to the traveller to choose one that suits their needs. With the wide variety available you will be able to select;
- A hostel that is family friendly or one that has a minimum age requirement
- A hostel that provides minimal comforts or one with premium rooms and beds
- A hostel that offers private rooms, same-gender shared rooms, or mixed-gender shares
Some hostels also share bathrooms, so it is important to figure which hostel will fit with your comfort levels. That being said, there are plenty of wonderful hostels that will accommodate the adult traveller on a budget.
