Unusual Holidays
The top ten most unusual holidays is like creating any list, pretty subjective. If spider racing in Norway is your thing, then going to Norway to race spiders is not going to seem unusual to you. To the rest of us, well, it might.
Firstly, how about Siberia? Tour the Polar Museum in St Petersburg, before chatting with the reindeer herders in Khatanga, a Siberian village. Once you’ve discussed the finer points about rearing Bambi-like creatures to haul the Big Man’s sledge at Christmas time, its off to see the Taymur Nature Reserve, the Kotuy River valley and the North Pole. Now, that should annoy the neighbours.
If that sounds way too cold, then how about a smellier holiday? Called “Aromatic Adventures”, it organises trips to Australia, Bali, France and Italy, and guests are taken through activities that involve perfume, cooking, spices, aromatherapy and lifestyles.
Too hippie, then how about creepy? If you think there might be something on the other side, then this break is about the paranormal. Locations are U.K. and European based and you are promised some mind-boggling experiences. So if Auntie Maud has threatened to come back and haunt you; maybe its time to strike first and find out what she can do.
Too weird, then how about a look at where Mr Geniis Khan built his reputation as a leader with an anger management problem? The steppes of Mongolia are vast and unspoilt, and this holiday does its best to emulate the nomads’ (30% still roam with the land) life with camel cart rides, horse trails and great trecks.
Too strenuous, then maybe a trip to one of the great maritime wrecks might whet your whistle. There is an agent who will organise Deep Ocean Submersible trips to see great ships in their final resting places, including the German Bismarck, the liner the Titanic and another warship, HMS Breadalbane which lies under the artic.
Too scary, then maybe scare yourself on dry land with a visit to Transylvania to visit the birthplace of, you’ve guessed it, Count Dracula. But that needn’t stop you, Transylvania is a beautiful part of Romania. Full of historic cities and cultural centres, Transylvania need not only be about a man with an unusual fetish and a black cape.
Too old hat, then how about a veggie break in Lapland? Apparently the nation of Finland is a Mecca for veggies and vegans. Not many of you knew that. Too eco, then pop along to Moscow and see why the Russians didn’t beat the U.S. to the moon, with visits to the Star City Training Centre, the Cosmonaut Museum in Moscow and the Mission Control Centre?
Too yesterday, then in a non-politically correct use of your time, how about going to Cuba to visit the factories where large leaves are rolled – not on the thighs of you know what - into something called the Cuban cigar.
Too smokey, then something more energetic might appeal, such a basketball trip to the U.S. All are welcome, including teams, players and supporters.
The top ten most unusual holidays; well, it’s a start, anyway.
