Spotlight on Toronto
Often mistaken as the capital of Canada, Toronto is the country’s largest metropolitan and a perfect destination for those looking for a cheap holiday and a bit of Canuck hospitality.
Weather and Seasons
One of the cheapest holiday spots in North America, Toronto has four distinct seasons with August and January being the harshest months for heat and cold respectively. The most popular holiday times to visit Toronto are early summer (May-July) and early fall (September) when the weather is warm, but not sweltering.
For those looking for a bargain holiday, April and October usually have nice mild weather, but are not as popular with tourists, so cheap holiday deals can be found more readily.
Flights
There are two airports in Toronto with Pearson being the most common arrival zone for international flights. This large airport supports most of the major airlines and has frequent international arrivals from cities around the world.
Pearson airport is located just west of the downtown core, but is easily accessible by taxicab, public transit, hotel shuttles, and car. Although settled amidst a forest of interstate highways, the airport’s presence has created a network of hotels, restaurants, and bars.
Very Cheap Holiday Transportation
Public transit in Toronto is an excellent way to travel on your cheap holiday. A single passenger can travel, round trip, from one end of the city to the other for around $6 Canadian. Day, week, and monthly passes are also available and work out to as low as $3 CAD/ day for unlimited travel.
Toronto public transit is comprised of buses, trams (called streetcars), and the tube (subway). Service runs frequently and at all hours of the day, if you remain close to the downtown core.
Very Cheap Holiday Activities
The urban centre provides endless entertainment for those who enjoy window-shopping and people watching. Within walking distance of downtown is the Harbour Front, a long stretch of waterfront boardwalks that boast excellent restaurants and free festivals, often with live music, all summer long.
The Harbour Front is also the docking point for the Centre Island Ferry. For around $6 CAD roundtrip, you can take a 20-minute ferry ride across the lake to a series of small islands. These islands provide many free activities to enjoy on your cheap holiday to Toronto. Try your hand at the popular sport Frisbee Golf – on the same course that hosts the Canadian Open each year.
Even while on a cheap holiday there still has to be room for a couple of splurges. Toronto is known as a centre for excellent dining – in several cultural styles. Sample the tastes of Little Italy, Greek Town, China Town, and fabulous Indian restaurants spread across the city.
