Getting the Most from your city Break (Brussels)
Brussels is a city packed with cultural and historical sites incorporated alongside modern city life, and so getting the most from your city break in Brussels is a vital part of your trip.
Number one, travel by train. Any city that sits on the European continent is likely to be well connected via trains, and Brussels is no exception. In fact, Brussels is amongst some of the most well-connected cities in Europe, mostly due to it being the administrative centre of the European Union.
The Eurostar directly connects Brussels to London’s St Pancras, and gets you into Brussels from England in a little under two hours. The view point from a train is better than any aeroplane, welcoming you to a new country with a ground-view of the scenery and the passing towns and villages. As you’re on the ground, you feel like you’ve arrived at your destination long before you would land at an airport.
Get a good travel guide. Make sure it is full of up-to-date information so that you don’t waste a day trying to find a wonderful Christmas market you read about that no longer exists. Good travel guides will have been written by people who have lived in or experienced Brussels, and so you can get a feel for the city and what sorts of things you may want to see even before you get there.
If you are only in Brussels for a short amount of time, try to organise things in advance so that your days do not feel wasted. Knowing that a particular market is running on the first day you are there, or reading about a beer you just have to try, can give you something to aim for, and that no time is wasted. Booking dinners or tickets to see events in advance can really take a weight of your mind when you arrive in a new country.
Get a City Card. Brussels has realised the potential it has for drawing in visitors and for making them feel welcome. With this in mind, they have created the City Card. For a short break, this card can entitle you to free public transport and reduced or even free entrances to shops and museums, as well as discounts for sightseeing tours or restaurants.
Do plenty of research. This is a given for organising anything, from horse-riding in New Zealand to taking a cruise, and getting the most from your city break in Brussels is no exception.
Getting the most from your city break is incredibly easy, and with some of the above tips, you can make sure that you enjoy a holiday to remember visiting the beautiful city of Brussels.
